receive the power of God

   1. How do we receive God's power?

      Acts 1:8

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea, in Samaria,

and to the ends of the earth. (KJV)

      Luke 24:49

And behold, I will send upon you what my Father has promised; but you remain in the city until you are endued with power from on high

      (KJV)

The Greek word used for POWER is 'dunamis.'  Which means a power

inherent with the ability to reproduce itself.

   2. How important is the Holy Spirit in ministry?

at)  In the life of Jesus.

When Jesus left heaven, He put aside all His privileges and His power to become a man of flesh and blood, totally dependent on the

Holy Spirit to obtain the power to perform healings and miracles.

         Philippians 2:5-7

Have in you the sentiments that were in Christ Jesus, who, existing in the form of God, did not regard as prey to be snatched from being.

equal with God, but stripped himself, taking the form of a servant, becoming like men; and having seemed like

         a mere man, (KJV)

         Matthew 3:13-17

Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. But Jean opposed it, saying: It is I who need to be

baptized by you, and you come to me! Jesus answered him, Let it be now, for it is becoming that we thus accomplish all that

is just. And Jean resisted him no longer. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he came out of the water. And behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God

descend like a dove and come upon him. And behold, a voice came from heaven saying these words: This is my beloved Son, in whom

I put all my affection. (KJV)

         Acts 10:38

Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. But Jean opposed it, saying: It is I who need to be

baptized by you, and you come to me! Jesus answered him, Let it be now, for it is becoming that we thus accomplish all that

is just. And Jean resisted him no longer. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he came out of the water. And behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God

descend like a dove and come upon him. And behold, a voice came from heaven saying these words: This is my beloved Son, in whom I have

         put all my affection. (KJV)

      b)   in the lives of his disciples.

The Ministry of Christ can only continue on earth today through His children who receive the power and empowerment of the Holy Spirit

as he did  when He was on earth.  So this additional presence or abundance of the Holy Spirit releases a power for the

A ministry that enables us to be effective witnesses and that enables us to continue the work of Jesus.

   3. What sign lets us know if we are filled with the Holy Spirit?

         Acts 19:1-2,6

While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, after traveling through the upper provinces of Asia, arrived at Ephesus. Having met some

disciples he said to them, Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed? They answered him: We have not even heard that there is

a Holy Spirit. He said: With what baptism, then, were you baptized? And they answered, Of the baptism of John. Then Paul said: John baptized

of the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in him who came after him, that is, in Jesus. With these words they were baptized

in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and

         prophesied. (KJV)

         Acts 10:44-46

As Peter still spoke these words, the Holy Spirit descended on all who heard the word. All the faithful circumcised who

came with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit was also poured out on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in

         tongues and glorify God. (KJV)

         Acts 2:4

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (KJV)

Speaking in tongues is the common denominator of these three scriptures.  Speaking in tongues is the SIGN that shows that we are filled with the Holy Spirit

It is worth noting here that in these three cases the Bible tells us that THEY (not the Holy Spirit) began to speak in tongues.  A lot of

people do not receive speaking in tongues because they expect the Holy Spirit to speak for them.  It's not true. The Holy Spirit us

inspire with words, but we have to speak them.

  4. What are some benefits of speaking in tongues?

  • When we speak our mother tongue it is our thought that does so; but when we speak in tongues it is our spirit that expresses the divine mysteries and secrets of God given by the Holy Spirit within us.

         Corinthians 14:2

Indeed, he who speaks in tongues does not speak to men, but to God, because no one understands him, and it is in the spirit that he speaks mysteries.

Here is a statement that clarifies this subject: Tongues are direct communication with our Almighty God,

a frequency so close the devil can't understand it.

  • Speaking in tongues edifies, builds and recharges your spiritual man with the supernatural power and ability of God.

         Corinthians 14:4

He who speaks in tongues edifies himself; he who prophesies edifies the Church. (KJV)

  • When we are at a loss for words to express what we feel in our hearts, we can speak in tongues and give God the glory He deserves, praise and worship.

         Acts 10:46

For they heard them speaking in tongues and glorifying God. (KJV)

  •   Because of our limited knowledge of most situations and a lack of knowledge of how to pray, we  have to  to depend  of the Holy Spirit within us and trust Him to pray the perfect prayer according to God's will, through us, by committing ourselves to Him by speaking in tongues.

         Romans 8:26-27

In the same way also the Spirit helps us in our weakness, because we do not know what it is appropriate for us to ask in our prayers. Corn

the Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible groans; and he who searches hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because

it is according to God that he intercedes in favor of the saints. (KJV)

  5. How can I know if I am ready to receive the Holy Spirit?

God wants to give us all the benefits of the Holy Spirit in our weak condition so that through His power we can live a

     victorious Christian life .

         John 1:7b-9

But if we walk in the light, as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of

Jesus his Son purifies us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not

point in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us of them, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (KJV)

  6.  How can I receive the Holy Spirit within me?

We receive the Holy Spirit within us in the same way that we receive everything from God:  By FAITH .

  • The Holy Spirit is a perfect gift from God and there is nothing we can do to work it, earn it or deserve it.

         Acts 2:38

Peter said to them, Repent, and each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the

gift of the Holy Spirit. (KJV)

  • The Holy Spirit is not for special people, but is the promise for ALL believers .

         Acts 2:39

For the promise is to you, to your children, and to all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God

         will call. (KJV)

  • We must ask in faith to be filled with the Holy Spirit and KNOW that we will receive, for it is God's desire that we be filled with the Holy Spirit as much as an earthly Father desires to give the best to his children.

         Luke 11:11-13

Which father among you will give a stone to his son if he asks him for bread? Or, if he asks for a fish, will he give him a

snake instead of a fish? Or, if he asks for an egg, will he give him a scorpion? If so, wicked as you are, you know

give good things to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.

         (KJV)

  • The Holy Spirit will give you new words or strange SOUNDS as He gives us to express, but you will have to GIVE Him your tongue and your vocal organs and begin to speak them in total CO-OPERATION.

         Acts 2:4

Dissatisfied with what they taught the people, and announced in the person of Jesus the resurrection of the dead. (KJV)

  • Don't let your mind play tricks on you by analyzing the words.

         Thessalonians 5:19

         Don't quench the Spirit. (KJV)

  • Jesus said being filled with the Holy Spirit is as simple as drinking a spiritual glass of water.

         John 7:37-39

On the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood up and cried out, If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. The one who believes in

         me, rivers of living water shall flow from his bosom, as the scripture says. He says this of the Spirit which those who believed in him were to receive;

for the Spirit was not yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified. (KJV)

One of the Greek words PNEUMA having for translation SPIRIT is also translated as WIND or BREATH.  God is in our midst, or in

the atmosphere, in the person of the Holy Spirit,  present here to fill our hearts.

         Matthew 18:20

For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am in their midst. (KJV)

Breathe deeply as an act of faith to drink of the Holy Spirit, who is in our midst.

As you exhale, BELIEVE the Holy Spirit is within you and start speaking THE SOUNDS that seem easy to make, and you will find yourself speaking in tongues. Don't stop talking until clear words come out of your mouth.
